In the nine months since Donald Trump's inauguration, US foreign policy has antagonised both allies and adversaries alike. Many see the Trump presidency as hastening the demise of US hegemony and the transition to a new bipolar global order in which China will be Washington's peer. If the primary goal of contemporary US foreign policy is to maintain America's edge over China (hardly a controversial premise), then the Trump administration's policy towards allies may ultimately prove its greatest act of self-harm.
