In Raymond Carver's short story 'What's in Alaska?' two couples get together and smoke marijuana through a hookah. The story begins with Carl and Mary preparing for their visit to their friends; Carl has brought a new pair of shoes, Mary's response to which is 'to suck her cheeks'. Mary mentions that she had a job interview earlier in the day and that she thinks she might get offered the job. It is in Alaska. She is indifferent but it will take her away from the empty life she currently leads – though for Carl it is 'great' because he has 'always wanted to go to Alaska.'
