A memory. I'm sitting in a courtyard outside a restaurant in Minsk on a warm summer's day. A hubbub of voices; car horns from the street behind me; the intermittent drilling from a nearby construction site. I run the tips of my fingers along the edge of the red-and-white-check patterned plastic tablecloth; the coarse texture comforts me, helps the background noises to fade from my mind. The paper napkins on the tables flap in the breeze.
